DVD Review: Paper Clips

In 1998, a middle school in a small Tennessee town decided to teach a class on the Holocaust as a means to help their children understand prejudice and diversity. When the teacher told the class that Hitler had killed 6 million Jews, one thoughtful student asked, "What is 6 million? I've never seen 6 million of anything."
And so they embarked on a project, collecting 6 million paper clips in an attempt to visualize just how massive Hitler's cruelty was. They ended up with 11 million, representing all those - not just Jews - who were killed in the death camps.
Paper Clips is a documentary telling the story about this project. It tells about the kids who made this happen, all the work they did, how they changed along the way, and the memorial that came about as a result. It's sobering looking at barrels of paper clips and realizing that each one represents a person. The class received letters from all over the world, many saying things like "I am sending four paper clips - one for each grandparent I never got to meet."
This DVD may be hard to find, but if your library doesn't have it, request that they get it. It should be available for everybody.
