Mom Rules #1, 2, & 3

I was driving while Erma and a friend were chatting in the backseat. Her friend was talking about another girl who goes tanning every day because she wants to be really dark. I said, "That's not good for your skin!"
Oops.
Erma and friend were silent for about 90 seconds. Then they started talking in whispers.
Those of you who don't yet have teenagers, please learn from my mistake. Never let them know you can hear their conversation. Never offer unsolicited advice, no matter how important it may be. And never, ever force them to acknowledge that you're in the same room/car, especially when they're with a friend.
I'm finding that being a parent is a lot like being hired help. Except you don't get paid. (So basically it's just a lot like being help)

don't let your girls know you can hear them. you've been trying for 13 years to tune them out when you're in the car cuz they're annoying. you should be good at this by now.

i know. as soon as the words were out of my mouth i thought, "big oops!" and the silence that followed told me full well what the looks on their faces were.
